In this Q&A, Master of International Trade Law and Economics (MITLE) student Teghpreet Sahni discusses his educational background in political science and political economy — and how their interaction shapes our world. He also shares his aspirations of working for a multinational corporation engaged in international trade, and pursuing law school to become a transnational business attorney.
What sparked your interest in learning about law and economics?
What sparked my interest in law and economics was my undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley. I majored in political science and minored in political economy where I learned how economics and politics, i.e. the market and the state, interact with one another and how that interaction shapes the world we live in today.
What made you pursue the MITLE degree in particular, and why at USC?
What made me pursue the MITLE degree was primarily motivated by my interest in law, politics and economics, and the MITLE program combines all three of these interests beautifully. I chose to pursue my graduate studies at USC because of the close proximity to where I plan to work professionally (Los Angeles) and the reputation of their law school and economics department.
How has it been transitioning into your program, and how has USC assisted you?
My transition into the program took some time but I got used to it as the semester progressed with the help of my professors and classmates. USC has been very supportive in providing access to resources, and advisors were always available to meet to address any problems I had.
What is the most memorable experience or lesson from your USC studies so far?
My most memorable experience was definitely meeting and learning from my professors. All my professors from both the law school and economics department have been great, and being able to learn from qualified individuals in fields that I aspire to one day work in has made USC a great place for me to continue my graduate studies. I also had a great time at Law Prom.
How will your degree from USC give you an advantage in your future career? What do you want to do next with your degree?
One of the biggest advantages I gained from studying at USC has been the professional connections I have made during my time here. After graduating from USC, I plan on working for a multinational corporation that actively engages in international trade, before pursuing a Juris Doctor. I aspire to become a transnational business lawyer that helps facilitate business between countries and MNCs.
